How to Turn Your House into a Wellness Retreat

They say our homes are our sanctuary, somewhere where we can feel peace, protection and privacy. However, our home is often overcome with the effects of day-to-day living, meaning that we sometimes feel as though being a homeowner is an extra chore in which we have to accomplish various tasks. From cleaning, to organising, paying bills, and looking after family members- the saying “I don’t get a moments peace!”- is one felt by homeowners everywhere. However, the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw people across the globe confined to their homes for the best part of a year, the importance of having a good home environment has never been more of a priority. In the wake of the pandemic, people are starting to understand the importance of self-care, mental health and physical wellbeing. And while not all of us can afford to whisk ourselves away to luxury spas or have weekly massages, there’s no reason your home can’t substitute for these things. Here at We Buy Any House we have compiled our top tips on how to turn your house into a wellness retreat.

Step One: Clear the Clutter-

Chaos is often the biggest cause of stress. Having miscellaneous items strewn about your house is never calming, and instead creates distraction and stress, as you have increasing things to think about and more to add to your to do list. Additionally, research shows the detrimental effects of clutter on your physical health. Not only can too much clutter be a fire hazard, but dust, mould and animal dander that collected in cluttered homes are harmful for those who suffer with allergies and asthma. If you want a space that is Zen, then it’s probably best to start with clearing the clutter.

Step Two: Dedicate a Space-

The second step is to designate a space which will be your room of peace. Understandably, its perhaps not ideal to try and turn your whole house into a sanctuary, as your normal home life has to take place somewhere. Therefore, the next best step is to allocate a designated space= somewhere such as your bedroom or beauty room. Make this space void of distractions, such as TV and work, and ensure that the room is cosy in the sense that it is carpeted, has insulated windows and dimmable lights.

Step Three: Use Natural Light:

Studies have shown that artificial light can negatively affect human health, due to the fact it can increase the risk of obesity, depression, sleep disorders, diabetes and breast cancer. Therefore, its important to include natural light in your wellness room, as it has proven health benefits. Increasing your exposure to natural light will encourage your body to release serotonin, which is a hormone that not only helps us concentrate but lifts our spirits.

Step Four: Make Time for Meditation:

Meditation has an endless list of health benefits. From gaining new perspectives on stressful situation, to reducing negative emotions, and increasing self-awareness- these are just a few of the positive health benefits regarding meditation. Using your room as a quiet space, it’s worthwhile practicing meditation, to reduce your stress levels and recreate the spa feel in your home.

Step Five: Add in Aromatherapy:

Research has shown that scents are closely related to our emotions. Using aromatherapy can be an important part of your wellness, as the scents you choose to diffuse around your home can have an impact on your mood. Popular oils include lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint- which can simply be added into an electronic diffuser. These calming scents will help lower stress levels and create a harmonious balance in your home.
